Finland, the Land of a Thousand Lakes, has already produced some terrific motor racing world champions despite having fewer inhabitants than the German capital and surrounding state of Brandenburg. BWT Mücke Motorsport have now put William Alatalo, a very talented young Finnish driver, under contract for next season. The 15-year-old will join the Formula 4 squad fielded by the Berlin-based outfit and fight for points in the Italian Formula 4 championship and contest two Formula 4 UAE races. Alatalo will make his race debut for BWT Mücke Motorsport in the Formula 4 UAE in Abu Dhabi, 2nd - 3rd February.
Alatalo was just seven years old in 2009 when he first began competing in kart races. The following year, he absolutely trounced the competition in the regional championships and continued on his way into the Finnish kart junior championship. His experience in one-on-one scraps and his outright speed were to bring him even more finishes up front. In 2013, he was fifth in the 'Rocket' class in the Finnish championship and became Finnish junior champion in 2014. His biggest success to date was in 2016 when he won the Finnish championship in the OK Junior class. He switched to open-wheel racing in 2017. The Finnish junior took a race win and four more podiums in his first year in the Formula STCC Nordic and was fifth overall.
Alatalo joins two more young teenagers at BWT Mücke Motorsport, Niklas Krütten and Ido Cohen, proving once again that the well established outfit from Berlin have their ear to the ground when scouting out young hopefuls. Alatalo joins the ranks of current motor racing stars such as Sebastian Vettel, Pascal Wehrlein, Marco Wittmann and Lucas Auer, who all started their careers with BWT Mücke Motorsport.
William Alatalo: "I've had a great time so far in motor racing and am set to become involved with BWT Mücke Motorsport in 2018, which is the next big highlight for me. I'm really looking forward to this season and am aware of the challenges I face in the two Formula 4 championships and can hardly wait to get started. I want to be a part of the success story at BWT Mücke Motorsport."
Team Principal Peter Mücke: "We've signed William to the team for this year. He's another very talented young driver. Finland has produced an impressive number of great athletes, and fresh talent continues to emerge with each new generation. William has shown in every series in which he has raced that he is extremely quick and a fast learner. We intend to build on that in 2018."
