Austrian Charlie Wurz has won the 2022 F4UAE Championship at Yas Marina Circuit with a race to spare and despite not winning a race in the final round this weekend (February 18-19, 2022).

After Friday’s two races, Saturday morning’s first 25-minutes race would be a pivotal point in the title fight mainly between Wurz and Prema Racing teammate Rafael Camara (#88). Points leader Wurz came into Race 3 needing only to outscore Camara by three points and not lose more than eight to his fellow rival contenders Aiden Neate from Abu Dhabi Racing by Prema and PHM Racing’s Nikita Bedrin.

The latter two fell out of contention on the opening lap when Bedrin suffered technical issues and Neate dropped to the rear of the field which prompted a safety car intervention. Camara lead from pole position and on the restart before dropping down the order halfway through the race due to contact with another driver and damaging the suspension.

Dunne won with a comfortable margin over Wurz and Xcel Motorsport’s Ivan Domingues (#89) third who passed James Wharton (#13) late in the race for the podium finish. Wurz scored  enough points to clear rival Camara outright and claim his first championship title with a race to spare.

“I’m so thankful to the team, and it’s really great to win the title here on such a famous circuit,” said Wurz. “It’s amazing to win it where F1 drivers fight and battle. They’re such sensational drivers and I hope to be competing here one day at that level.”

In addition to his title, Wurz also made history by winning the first race ever run in the second-generation Tatuus F4 car at the F4UAE Trophy Round last December, held as part of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He then went on to win two races during the championship season, claim 10 podium finishes and three pole positions.

Wurz joins a list of credible young F4UAE champions including Jonathan Aberdein (2017), Charles Weerts (2018), Matteo Nannini (2019), Francesco Pizzi (2020) and Enzo Trulli (2021). Wurz’s win makes it the second year in a row that a son of a former F1 driver has taken the title, with Trulli last year winning with support from his father Jarno, an Wurz in the UAE with his father Alex.

“Congratulations Charlie for winning 2022 F4UAE title and also for being a standout driver all season and very talented young man,” said category promoter Craig Thompson. “To came into the last round with seven potential champions was extraordinary, and also with a record number of drivers with over 40 competing this season at various times. It’s been a very buys five weeks straight and so much hard work put in by all of the members of pitlane and we can’t thank our drivers, teams and partners enough for supporting such a record-breaking season for F4UAE.”
