Rasgaira Motorsports has today announced the addition of 18-year-old Irish racing driver James Roe Jr to their team to contest the full 2016/2017 Formula 4 UAE Championship powered by Abarth, which begins with Round 1 this weekend at the Dubai Autodrome (November 17-19).

Making his first ever F4 start, Roe is the the only Irish driver on the grid. The 18-year-old began his racing career in the Ginetta Junior Ireland Championship where he finished on pole three times with one race win. He then went on to finish first, second and fourth in the three rounds of the 2014/2015 Junior Rallycross Championship, which is then when he won Dunlop Young Racing Driver of the Month for July 2015. Later that year, Roe broke the lap record at Mondello Park's national track while competing in his second Ginetta Junior Ireland Championship where he finished as the overall runner-up with four race wins.

Roe's relatively brief racing career led him to be named one of six drivers selected to participate in the new Team Ireland Motorsports Foundation in 2016. Launched by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, the initiative is aimed at supporting the development of talented young drivers from an array of different motorsports backgrounds. Having only first driven the F4UAE Tatuus racecar this past Wednesday November 16, Roe said he is excited to be contesting a new racing formula in the UAE.

"I never drove with slicks and wings before so it's amazing how much more grip you have. It's a completely different driving style so it's a matter of diving in and chipping away," said Roe Jnr. "The biggest thing for me is the brake pressures, you can brake so much harder and later in these cars but it's great fun to drive. You have to be on the ball all the time and more precise with your driving, always thinking 10 steps ahead. It's my first time to Dubai and I've never driven on a sandy track before but I'm loving it. I can't wait to go racing now."

Team manager Richard Cregan also welcomed Roe to the team and wished him well in developping his racecraft for the season ahead.

“The Formula 4 UAE Championship will be a big learning curve for James. Being his first international Championship, James will have to adapt to the regional differences that come with racing in the Middle East. We are pleased to welcome James to the team and give him this opportunity to show what he can do and develop as a driver,” concluded Cregan.

Round 1 of the F4UAE Championship begin's today Thursday November 17 with two extened test sessions, Friday will host official practice, qualifying, and Race 1 of the season, while Races 2 and 3 will be run on Saturday. More event information can be found at www.f4uae.com
